Support coordination: role, questions and choosing a provider
Support coordination helps an NDIS participant understand their plan, connect with supports and build confidence in managing arrangements. The exact role and service depend on the participant’s plan and current NDIS rules. A support coordinator does not make funding decisions for the NDIA and should support the participant’s choice and control.
What may a support coordinator help with?
Depending on the approved support and agreed role, coordination may include explaining plan information, identifying providers, arranging service agreements, helping resolve practical barriers, preparing for changes and building the participant’s ability to manage supports. Ask the coordinator to explain what is included, what is outside the role and how progress will be discussed.
Questions to ask before engaging
- What coordination support is included, and how will we agree on priorities?
- How will you help the participant make informed choices and stay in control?
- How will you communicate, keep records and share information with consent?
- How do you handle conflicts of interest or referrals to connected providers?
- What are your fees, cancellation terms and availability?
- How can the participant give feedback or change coordinators?
Check fit and transparency
Ask whether the coordinator understands the participant’s communication preferences, location, culture and support needs. Confirm any qualifications, experience or registration requirements relevant to the service. Request a written agreement that explains deliverables, contact arrangements, fees, privacy and ending the service. A coordinator should explain options clearly and allow the participant time to decide.
NDIS funding and service scope
Do not assume a coordination service is funded simply because a provider offers it. Check the participant’s current plan and official NDIA guidance. The participant may wish to ask their NDIA contact or a qualified adviser how a proposed service fits their circumstances. Care4AU cannot interpret plans or determine funding eligibility.
