Home accessibility and safety
Make home safer, easier and more accessible
Find services for mobility equipment, home modifications, bathroom safety, ramps, rails, minor maintenance and practical home help.
When this support may help
Home accessibility support may help after a change in mobility, a hospital stay, ageing, disability, or when you want to reduce everyday risks at home.
Funding and costs
Funding may be available through the NDIS, aged-care programs, private insurance or direct payment. For larger modifications, ask whether an assessment, quote, approval or qualified installer is needed.
Questions to ask a provider
- Do you assess the home before recommending work or equipment?
- Are you qualified and insured for this modification?
- Can you provide a clear written quote and expected timing?
- How will you make sure the solution is safe and suitable?

Separate routine help from specialist work
Start by describing the job in everyday language. Cleaning the kitchen, maintaining a garden, getting groceries and changing the physical layout of a bathroom are different services. A general home-help business may not have the qualifications or insurance for building, electrical or plumbing work. Tell a provider exactly what needs doing and ask them to confirm the tasks they can undertake.
- For regular household tasks, compare domestic assistance and home help.
- For outdoor maintenance and cleaning, read cleaning and gardening support.
- For equipment or changes to how a space is used, start with occupational therapy where an assessment is appropriate.
- For physical changes to a property, read home modifications and accessibility.
Give enough detail for a meaningful quote
List the rooms, areas or tasks involved and whether the work is a one-off or regular visit. Explain access issues, parking, stairs, pets and whether you will be at home. Ask if equipment, materials, waste removal and travel are included. For ongoing work, agree on priorities in case the booked time is not enough to finish everything. A clear task list helps both sides avoid misunderstandings.
Before agreeing to changes to your home
Ask for a written scope of work and an itemised quote. Establish who is responsible for assessment, measurements, permissions and any required approvals. Renters should check the property owner’s requirements before work begins. For specialist or regulated work, check the appropriate qualifications, licences and insurance. Funding approval and permission to alter a property are separate questions; do not assume that one automatically provides the other.
Make visits comfortable and predictable
- Agree on arrival times and how the worker will identify themselves.
- Explain communication preferences and whether you want a trusted person present.
- Decide how keys, entry instructions or access codes will be handled securely.
- Ask who to contact if the worker is late or cannot attend.
- Keep an agreed list of tasks, charges and any changes to the booking.
Funding and payment questions
Some people pay privately; others have approved support through a relevant funding program. Whether a particular task can be funded depends on the person’s arrangements and the work proposed. Confirm this before booking. Ask what you must pay yourself, when invoices are due and whether materials or specialist assessments cost extra. Care4AU does not approve funding or certify building work.
Not sure which category fits?
You can send a free support request using your own words. For example: “I need fortnightly help with bathroom cleaning and changing bed linen in Perth. I would like the same worker where possible and prefer an email first.” For larger work, describe the practical difficulty you want to solve before choosing a specific product or alteration. Our questions to ask a provider can help you compare the responses.
