Aged care at home: services, assessment and choosing a provider
Aged care at home can help an older person remain independent and connected to their community. The right service depends on the person’s needs, preferences, assessment and the program available to them. My Aged Care is the Australian Government starting point for information and assessment. Care4AU is an independent directory and cannot determine eligibility or funding.
What support may be available?
Depending on assessment and current program rules, supports may include help with daily living, personal care, household tasks, meals, transport, social connection, nursing or allied health. Not every provider offers every service, and availability varies by location. Ask what a service includes and whether it can meet the person’s current needs.
Start with My Aged Care
Contact My Aged Care to discuss the person’s circumstances and whether an assessment is appropriate. Assessment and program pathways can change, so confirm current steps and eligibility directly with My Aged Care. The person can ask a trusted family member, carer or representative to help, subject to the relevant consent and authority arrangements.
Compare providers and costs
Ask whether the provider is approved for the relevant program, which services are available in the person’s area, when care could begin, and what the person may need to contribute. Request a written explanation of fees, travel, cancellation and other charges. Ask about worker continuity, qualifications, complaints, service agreements and how care can change if needs change. Use My Aged Care’s current cost information to understand the applicable arrangements; do not assume a directory profile or provider quote means a service is funded.
Keep the older person’s preferences central
Discuss routines, communication, language, cultural preferences, privacy, pets, access and who the person wants involved. Explain choices in a way that is easy to understand and give the person time to decide. Ask providers how they support dignity, choice and feedback.
Prepare for the first conversation
- List the tasks or outcomes the person wants help with.
- Note location, preferred days and any accessibility needs.
- Ask for a written service description and current price information.
- Check what happens when a worker is unavailable or support needs change.
- Keep copies of assessment, agreement and invoices in a secure place.
