When this support may help
Allied-health services can support mobility, communication, mental wellbeing, daily routines, independence and participation. The best fit may depend on goals, experience, appointment format and accessibility.
Funding and costs
Funding may be available through the NDIS, aged-care programs, Medicare, private health insurance or direct payment. Confirm referral needs, gap costs and cancellation terms first.
Questions to ask a provider
- Do you have experience supporting people with my goals?
- Do you offer home visits, telehealth or accessible clinic appointments?
- What is the likely cost and is a referral required?
- How will progress and next steps be explained in plain language?

Explore related allied-health support
- Occupational therapy for daily living, independence and home-safety goals.
- Speech pathology for communication, swallowing and mealtime support.
- Physiotherapy for mobility, strength, pain management and movement goals.
- Psychology and counselling or nursing and complex care when those supports fit your needs.
Start with your goal, not a professional title
You may know what you want to change without knowing which professional to contact. Describe the task or activity: communicating more comfortably, moving around the home, managing everyday routines or taking part in something important to you. A suitable professional can explain whether their service fits that goal or whether another type of service would be more appropriate. This directory is a starting point for enquiries, not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation.
- Occupational therapy: discuss everyday activities, environments, equipment or practical participation goals.
- Speech pathology: ask about the particular communication or swallowing-related service you need and the clinician’s relevant experience.
- Physiotherapy: explain the movement or physical activity you want help with and ask about assessment options.
- Psychology and counselling: ask about qualifications, scope of practice and whether the service works with people in your circumstances.
Check the person who will provide the service
A business name alone does not tell you who you will see. Ask for the practitioner’s name, profession and experience relevant to your goal. For professions regulated through Ahpra, use the official practitioner register to check their registration. Not every allied-health profession is regulated through Ahpra; where it is not, ask about relevant qualifications and professional accreditation. A Care4AU listing is not a substitute for these checks.
Choose a practical appointment format
Ask whether appointments are in a clinic, at home, in the community or by telehealth. Consider transport, step-free access, parking, a quiet waiting area, accessible toilets and whether a support person can attend. For telehealth, ask what device or software is needed and how to get help if the connection fails. Home visits may involve travel charges or minimum booking requirements, so request the full cost in writing.
Understand the first appointment and ongoing costs
- What happens at the initial appointment, and how long does it take?
- Is a referral needed, and what information should I bring?
- What is included in the appointment fee? Are reports, letters or meetings charged separately?
- How will we agree on goals and review whether the service is helping?
- What are the current wait time, cancellation terms and options if I need to change practitioner?
Funding depends on the service, your circumstances and any applicable plan or referral requirements. Confirm the proposed payment arrangement before booking; do not assume that a practitioner’s listing means a rebate or plan payment is available. You can ask for time to check the quote with the person who helps manage your funding.
