How to prepare for your first support worker visit

A first visit can feel unfamiliar for a participant and the people supporting them. A little preparation can make expectations clearer while keeping the person in control. The provider should explain who is coming, what the service covers and how to raise questions before support starts.

Confirm the practical details

  • Check the date, arrival window, visit length and how the worker will identify themselves.
  • Confirm which tasks are included and what the worker cannot do.
  • Ask what happens if the worker is delayed or cannot attend.
  • Make sure access arrangements, parking, pets or communication preferences are understood.
  • Review any fees, travel charges, cancellation terms and service agreement.

Share useful information safely

Tell the provider what they need to deliver the agreed support, such as preferred routines, communication style, accessibility requirements or relevant safety steps. Share sensitive health information only when necessary, with the participant’s permission and through an appropriate secure channel. Do not leave passwords, bank details or identity documents in an open form or unsecured note.

Support the person’s choice

Ask the participant how they would like the first visit to go: whether someone should be present, what name to use, how they prefer instructions, and how they want to give feedback. Explain that they can ask for a pause, clarification or change if something feels uncomfortable. Do not assume that a family member should lead the conversation.

After the visit

Check privately with the participant about what worked and what they would like changed. If needed, contact the provider through its agreed channel and keep a note of what was discussed. Raise urgent safety concerns promptly through appropriate services. Care4AU can correct directory information but cannot manage a provider relationship or investigate incidents.
