NDIS self-managed supports

Self-management means a participant or their nominee manages the NDIS funds for some or all supports in the plan. The participant chooses providers and is responsible for paying invoices and keeping records in line with current NDIS requirements. Self-management can offer flexibility, but the participant should understand the administration involved and check current rules with the NDIA.

What to check before engaging a provider

  • Confirm the support relates to the participant’s plan and goals and is allowed under current NDIS rules.
  • Agree the service, price, schedule, travel charges and cancellation terms in writing.
  • Check invoices show the service provided, dates and amounts, and keep them with payment records.
  • Ask about qualifications, insurance, screening and backup arrangements relevant to the service.
  • Consider whether you want help with budgeting, record keeping or paying providers.

Can I choose an unregistered provider?

Self-managed participants generally have more provider choice, but requirements and exceptions can apply to particular supports and circumstances. Check the NDIA’s current information before engaging a provider. A Care4AU listing does not confirm that a service is claimable from a plan.

Keep the participant’s choice central

Self-management should support the participant’s goals and preferences. Take time to compare options, ask questions and make sure the person understands the agreement. If someone else manages funds as a nominee, involve the participant in decisions as much as possible.

Read the official NDIS self-management guidance, use the provider comparison checklist, and review service agreements. Care4AU’s support request form is free and does not commit you to a provider.
