Respite care: planning a break and comparing providers
Respite or short-term support can give a participant and their usual carers a planned break, help with a transition or provide temporary assistance when regular arrangements change. The service may be delivered at home, in the community or in another setting, depending on the provider and funding pathway. Availability, eligibility and funding rules differ, so confirm details before making arrangements.
Plan around the person’s needs
Discuss what the participant wants from the break, preferred routines, communication, accessibility, cultural or dietary needs and any essential health or safety information. Involve the person in planning and share sensitive details only with permission and through a secure process.
Questions for a respite provider
- What type of respite do you provide and where does it take place?
- Who will provide the support, and what qualifications or screening apply?
- What dates are available, and what is the backup plan if a worker is unavailable?
- How do you support medication routines, personal care and communication?
- What are the full costs, travel charges, deposits and cancellation terms?
- How can the participant or family raise a concern during the service?
Check funding and written terms
Do not assume a respite service is covered by an NDIS plan or aged-care program. Ask the provider for a clear quote and service description, then confirm funding requirements with the NDIA, My Aged Care or an independent qualified adviser as relevant. Read the service agreement and ask how changes, cancellations and emergencies are handled.
Compare providers using our NDIS checklist, aged-care checklist and questions guide. Care4AU’s support request is free and does not commit you to a provider.
