Nursing and complex care at home
Some people need nursing or more complex health-related support at home or in the community. The service should be planned with appropriately qualified health professionals and matched to the person’s needs. Care4AU does not provide clinical advice, assess care needs or confirm that a service is safe for a particular person.
Confirm who will provide the care
Ask whether the service is delivered by a registered nurse, enrolled nurse or another trained worker, and which tasks each role can perform. Check current registration with Ahpra for registered practitioners. Ask how supervision, clinical escalation, handovers and continuity are managed, including what happens if the usual worker is unavailable.
Discuss the care plan and safety
Before care begins, the provider should explain the service scope, responsibilities, communication arrangements, consent, privacy and how concerns are handled. Ask how the provider coordinates with the person’s treating team, with consent, and what information they need. Share health information only through appropriate secure channels; avoid placing detailed medical records in a public enquiry form.
Check costs and funding
Ask for a written quote covering visits, travel, consumables, after-hours work and cancellation terms. Funding and provider requirements depend on the person’s circumstances and the support type. Confirm current rules with the NDIA, My Aged Care or another responsible program before relying on funding. A directory listing or quote is not a funding approval.

- Which professional will be responsible for clinical decisions?
- What qualifications, registration and insurance apply?
- How are incidents, deterioration or urgent changes escalated?
- Can the provider meet the person’s location, schedule and communication needs?
