Supported Independent Living (SIL): choosing a provider and home

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS support for eligible participants who need assistance or supervision with daily tasks in their home. SIL funding is for support, not the cost of rent, groceries or ordinary household expenses. The participant’s individual circumstances, plan and current NDIA rules determine what may be funded. Care4AU cannot assess eligibility or confirm funding.

Start with the person and their preferred living arrangement

Discuss where the person wants to live, who they may want to live with, what routines matter and what level of support feels right. A shared home can involve shared staff and house routines, while other arrangements may differ. Ask how the provider supports privacy, choice, visitors, relationships, cultural preferences and the person’s right to make everyday decisions.

Questions to ask a SIL provider

  • What support is delivered, at what times, and by which workers?
  • How is overnight support arranged and what happens in an emergency?
  • Who else lives in the home, and can the participant visit or meet housemates?
  • How are staff matched, trained and supervised?
  • How are conflicts, complaints, incidents and changes in support handled?
  • What costs are separate from SIL, including rent, food, utilities or transport?
  • How can the participant change providers or leave the arrangement?

Understand funding and agreements

Ask for the proposed support model, roster of care and service agreement in writing. Check what the participant’s current plan says and confirm applicable requirements with the NDIA or a qualified adviser. A vacancy or provider statement does not mean SIL funding has been approved. Housing costs are generally separate from support funding; get a clear explanation of all financial responsibilities before agreeing.

Plan a safe transition

Where possible, arrange visits and give the participant time to understand the home, routines and people. With permission, plan the move alongside relevant health professionals, family or coordinators. Agree how personal information, possessions, medication instructions and emergency contacts will be handled securely.
